Two of Dublin 4’s finest faced off in the familiar surroundings of Pembroke Cricket Club’s immaculate grounds at Sydney Parade, when Merrion took on YMCA in the League Cup Final.

Merrion batted first and YM were celebrating before the first over had been completed as Michael Lewis trudged back to the shed, bowled by Cillian McDonnell.

This proved to be a false dawn as Jack Carty (59) was joined by John Anderson (28). This pair brought the score up to 68/1 before Ando was caught by Curtis Campher off the bowling of James Forbes.

Grant Glutz came and went without bothering the bookkeepers only to be replaced by Dom Joyce (43). Dom was run out in the 19th over with the score on 143.

Carty, however, soldiered on until the second last ball of the innings when Tom Anders had him caught by Forbes. Merrion 150/7.

The YMCA response looked to be getting off to a flyer as Rory Anders (13) clattered a couple of sixes to energise the YM force, but having faced just 5 balls Rory was run out with the score on 16.

That was a serious blow which was exacerbated by the dismissal of Jack Tector in the 4th over. Tim Tector (41) and Curtis Campher (31) looked to consolidate and had carried the score to 89 in the 13th over when Tim became the second run-out victim.

Mitchell Thompson (15) joined the fray after Max Sorensen had Campher caught by Glutz. Bobby Gamble (24) worked with Thompson to bring the score to 121, but Mitch was caught by Sorensen off Jack Carty’s bowling.

So, with 15 balls remaining, YM needed 30 runs to win; Bobby Gamble and Tom Anders battled on and with 4 balls to come Gamble was run out and the gig was up at 141/6 Anders and JJ Cassidy added 2 runs each and YMCA had come up 7 runs short of a winning total.

So, an enthralling Cup final had come down almost to the wire and Merrion were crowned Leinster Senior League Cup champions for 2021.

Next week we’ll see the resumption of Premier League and Championship 50 over cricket as the coloured kit and white balls are put to bed for a while.
