Last weekend saw the Leps fly south for three traditional end of season games. For the second time this year (previously Athlone/Halverstown) we produced two sides on Saturday.

Bobbo led (from behind!!) an ‘Amsterdam based’ squad to The Mardyke (sure isn’t it full of dykes....Amsterdam NOT Cork). This resurrected a fixture beloved of the late great Gerry Duffy.

County started nicely but Averil Shukla soon had them in a spin as they posted 139.

At 70/7 the Leps WERE going south until Tomás Murphy took over, aided and abetted by a fellow ‘wino’, Cain Nulty (35*).Tomás’s best knock since his 80 @ Brymbo.

MEANWHILE in County Carlow the ‘Senior Service’ we’re playing Bagenalstown in a ‘declaration jobbie’.

Bobbo’s Dad duly declared (on 183/9, P. Auret 58) having popped Simon Hawkins onto the 14th fairway. (Marty Block dubbed it ‘A Virgin 6’).

When the Angelus bell signaled the the start of the last 20 overs, Bagenalstown needed 100. A chanceless 94 from Paddy Hooda and a valuable 16 from the development officer (sporting his recently acquired Sussex accent) saw the Lep’s carrot devoured.

Sunday was Mt.Juliet (at it most Beautiful). A (VERY) minor disagreement between the skippers gave us a 32 over game.....and what a game (& a game within a game !!!).

Leps posted a slightly pedestrian 158/4 (Blackley 39, Bain(appropriately named) 34*, Shimmins 30 & Gary Cooke a good 20 not a great 20).

The chase was also a little pedestrian UNTIL a quiet remarkable catch brought Mt. Juliet’s ‘joker’ to the middle. Richie Duffin didn’t disappoint (nothing virginal about the several 6’s he smote). Ian Walshe (Enniscorthy CC) caught him at fine third-man (off an unlucky top edge) with 4 needed off 4 balls.

The 5 over joust between Richy and Ash Bain had been spellbinding. Mick Snackenburg’s hands were well warmed behind the stumps. It’s took a beer or two to wash away the tension.

The said Ash Bain, recently arrived from South Africa is a lucky man. His first three games in Ireland will come at our three most beautiful grounds.

He is off to Stradbally (Midland CC’s 50th anniversary game) this coming Sunday.

He will not be playing for the Leps however because sadly (some would say shamefully) we were not asked...
