There was sad news of the passing of Civil Service stalwart ( and all-round ‘good egg’) Brian Brennan.

A keeper by trade, he kept his pads on over the winter in goal for Lorraine.

Synge Street educated, he learned his cricket in ‘The Vatican’ (C.Y.M. Terenure).

Following a ‘Reformation’ Brian moved to Phoenix Park (to the ‘RIGHT’ side of the Dog Pond) where he plied his trade(s) for 40 or so years.

He opened the batting and valued his wicket (more red ball than white ball!)

Apart from the comings and goings of league cricket, Brian went ‘off piste’ occasionally, featuring in the mBongoland trophy game played annually in Tom McGurk’s place in Glencree.

(Pic. allegedly shows Brian being presented, by Jimmy Larkin, with the keys of a Triumph Herald, the M-O-M award).

Trips to Kilrane were also on the agenda. Along with a crowd of Terenure Wall-NUTS he followed his country to Jamaica for the World Cup.

Picture the scene as he and Tony Connell argued the Bohs/Rovers case, poolside at Montego Bay!!

Latterly Brian shared his time watching at Civil Service and Castle Avenue, where manys a seat got a lick of his paint brush. He really looked forward to the interruptions! He painted as he batted....”It’s all about the finish, Dick”

When Olwyn locked his gear in the attic they took to going racing (n.b. N.H.), Naas, Fairyhouse, Punchestown etc.

They even left ‘The Pale’ once and came to Gowran. “Did you back that winner, Brian ?”

“No, but she had it !”

For a man who couldn’t pick a horse, he certainly picked a smashing ‘filly’!!

Sympathies to Olwyn and his kids from the cricket world.
