Gavin Roulston’s unbeaten 92 helped Ireland Under 17s get off to a winning start as they beat Scotland by 109 runs (DLS) in the opening match of their Celtic Cup series at Upritchard Park.

Batting first, Ireland were given a flying start by Ryan Hunter – who hit 8 boundaries in his 37 from 25 balls- and Aaron McGeehan (29) who added 74 in 9 overs.

Adi Hegde (3-28) got Scotland back into the contest, but Roulston wrestled back control with his unbeaten 92 from 106 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes), adding 77 for the 5th wicket with Harry Dyer (29).

Rain reduced the game to 47 overs, denying Roulston a hundred, but he and Eoin Birch (19*) added late runs to take them to 252 for 6.

DLS adjusted the target upwards to 260, and once Donncha Tucker trapped Scottish opener Jamie Dunk for 31, the chase faltered.

Skipper Daniel Forkin and CIYMS’ Carson McCullough each took three wickets as the visitors were dsmissed for 150. T

he sides meet again on Tuesday at the same venue in a T20 double-header.

Meanwhile at Oak Hill, Ireland U13s got the tri-series off to a winning start as they beat Middlesex Schools by 9 runs in a game reduced by rain to 16 overs.

Knockharley's Lorcan Craik top-scored in the Irish total of 94 for 4.

It proved just enough as a disciplined bowling display saw the Londoners restricted to 85 for 8.

There are two games at the same venue until Thursday - Ireland U19 girls are the other side in the series.
