In an extraordinary fall from grace, former Nepal captain Sandeep Lamichhane has been convicted of the rape of a 17 year old girl.

He was accused of raping the girl on 21 August 2022 with an international arrest warrant issued as Lamichhane was in the West Indies for the Caribbean Premier League. He arrived back in Nepal on October and was arrested at Tribhuvan International Airport.

Initially banned by the Cricket Association of Nepal, he was freed on bail and his ban lifted. His trial was repetedly delayed whenever Nepal had an international engagement, leading some to be sceptical that he would ever face justice. His presence in the Nepal side was controversial, with Scotland notably refusing to shake hands with him during a CWC League 2 ODI tri-series in Dubai.

Lamichhane continued to enjoy public support despite the allegations, and has always denied them. Nevertheless, he has been convicted, with his sentence to be decided at a subsequent hearing on 10 January.
