A look at how the Ireland Women players performed in 2023, with Gaby Lewis topping the run charts and Arlene Kelly the stand-out bowler leading the wicket takers.

Ed Joyce's side went into 2023 with some optimism having secured a T20 series win at the end of 2022 against Pakistan in Lahore.

A win against Australia in an unofficial warm-up match ahead of the T20 World Cup bolstered that optimism, but reality bit in the tournament proper, although there were some encouraging moments and displays against the world elite.

The team played just 20 matches in the entirety of 2023 - 12 T20I's and 8 ODI's - one of which was a no-result.

A 12-game losing streak was ended with a 3-0 win over the Netherlands, and the season finished in Spain with five matches against Scotland, winning three and losing two to end the year with a played 20, won 5, lost 14, no-result 1 record.

Does 20 matches constitute enough cricket for a now professional set-up? I wouldn't think so, and the announcement of eight matches against Zimbabwe next month would suggest the powers that be don't think the volume was enough either.

Four players - Laura Delany, Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast played in all 20 games, while Arlene Kelly (19) and Cara Murray (18) were almost ever-present too suggesting a mostly settled squad.

18 players were used in total, with Ava Canning (15), Rebecca Stokell (13), Georgina Dempsey (12), Leah Paul (12), and Louise Little (11) all playing more than half the games.

On the batting front, there were 11 half centuries scored with three apiece for Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast, while Leah Paul managed two as well.

Lewis total of 577 took her past the 3000-run mark for Ireland (3078), second now only to Clare Shillington (3328) at the top of the all-time aggregate charts, so it's not inconceivable that the YM opener could pass that milestone in Africa next month.

While skipper Laura Delany didn't get to 50, she was very consistent in the middle-order with eight scores over 20.

It was another superb year for Arlene Kelly who equalled her Irish record haul of 28 wickets in a season, this time at 18.18, with her best-bowling of 5 for 12 coming against the Dutch. Her haul of 56 wickets in two seasons puts her at eighth on the all-time aggregates list and with more surely to come in the years ahead.

Ciara Murray (17), Laura Delany (14) and Georgina Dempsey (13) all reached double figures too, while Ava Canning (9) and Orla Prendergast (7) chipped in.

There were a few new faces too, as Aimee Maguire and Freya Sargent made their debuts, while Alana Dalzell made a return after her solitary cap - the trio all showing enough to suggest that there will be plenty more appearances on the horizon for a youthful looking squad.
