North Down left frustrated as talented squad fails to click
North Down’s sixth-place Premiership finish will surely go down as one of the more disappointing outcomes of the 2026 NCU season.

On paper, the Comber side appeared to possess everything required to mount a serious challenge. There was quality, experience, international pedigree and a strong overseas professional, yet for whatever reason the pieces never quite fitted together. They were, ultimately, less than the sum of their parts.
South African professional Mike Erlank certainly delivered his side of the bargain. He enjoyed an outstanding campaign with 832 runs at an average of 64, including three centuries and three fifties, with a highest score of 178. Erlank also claimed 22 wickets at 25.55, making him one of the competition’s leading all-round performers.
Mohamed Aahill provided excellent support with 606 runs at 37.88, including two centuries, while captain Tyron Koen scored 541 at a strike rate above 100 and also collected 22 wickets. Kian Hilton contributed 394 runs, including a century, while Harry Zimmermann added 381.
North Down had entered the campaign with plenty of optimism. Koen spoke beforehand about the quality in the squad, with Erlank joining as professional and Zimmermann and Arnold Oduvelil arriving to strengthen a young group containing Hilton, Stevie Saul, Jacob McClure-Dalzell and Luke Crothers.
Zimmermann proved their leading wicket-taker with 35 at 21.26, including two five-wicket hauls. Koen and Erlank took 22 apiece, but after that the returns dropped away.
McClure-Dalzell claimed 17, while Oduvelil and Ireland international Craig Young each took 12. Young’s availability was limited to seven matches, another reminder that North Down were not always able to put their strongest side on the field.
Yet the talent was unquestionably there. They could produce excellent cricket on their day, but the consistency required to challenge for the major trophies never materialised. Too often a strong individual performance was not matched elsewhere in the XI. That is what will frustrate most.
Sixth place was not a disaster, but for a squad with this much ability it represented underachievement. The task for 2027 is therefore not necessarily a major rebuild. North Down already possess much of what they need.
The bigger challenge is finding the chemistry and consistency to turn a collection of highly capable individuals into a side capable of sustaining a title challenge across an entire summer.
