Play is underway in Germany at the second of three European sub-regional qualifiers which form part of qualifying for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup.

Hosts Germany are in Group B of the ten team tournament, along with Gibraltar, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden. Jersey, looking to make a return to the regional final, are in Group A with Belgium, Croatia, Serbia and Switzerland.

Before the tournament started, there was a last minute change to the schedule after one of the two grounds set to host matches was declared unfit, leaving just the Bayer Uerdingen Cricket Ground in Krefeld to host all matches.

In the first of two matches today, Jersey showed why they are the favourites to progress with a thumping win over Serbia. Harrison Carlyon and Nick Greenwood opened the batting and put on 194 before Carlyon was out having clubbed 110 from just 57 balls.

Jonty Jenner was out for a golden duck, but Nick Greenwood stayed in and finished unbeaten on 85 from 52 balls as the Channel Islanders racked up 233-3 from their 20 overs, their highest score in the format. Greenwood then took three wickets for just eight runs as Serbia were bowled out for just 68, losing by 165 runs.

In the second match of the day, Belgium won the toss and asked Switzerland to bat first. Faheem Nazir and Idrees Ul Haque opened with a 90 run partnership which ended when Nazir was out for 42, scored from 26 balls. Ul Haque scored 55 before he was the third man out and Ahmed Hassan scored 49 in the Swiss total of 172-4.

Just before the halfway stage of the Belgian reply, a collapse began as Belgium went from 92-3 to 118-8 in five overs. But Burhan Niaz and number 10 Sajad Ahmadzai were able to put on an unbroken 59 with Niaz scoring 72 to secure a two wicket win with five balls to spare that looked unlikely a few overs earlier.

Hosts Germany play their first match tomorrow morning when they take on Gibraltar. This will be followed by a match between Scandanavian rivals Norway and Sweden. The day will conclude with Belgium looking to make it two from two when they come up against Croatia.
