Laura Delany's eight-year term as Ireland captain has been ended by Ireland and she will be replaced by Gaby Lewis for the forthcoming tours of Bangladesh and India.

The 31 year-old Leinster all-rounder took over the captain's armband in 2016 after Isobel Joyce stepped down.

Delany is Ireland's most capped player with 207 caps following her debut in 2010. She has led Ireland 126 times since then, winning 59 times.

There was no comment from Delany in the official Cricket Ireland statement confirming her axing as captain.

Head Coach Ed Joyce outlined the rationale behind the decision.

"The selectors feel that it is time now for new leadership at the senior level. This change in dynamic has meant we have sought a new leadership team."

Head of Selectors Ciara O'Brien thanked her for her eight years at the helm.

“We would like to sincerely thank Laura for her remarkable leadership since being appointed in 2016. Her professionalism and commitment to the team has been instrumental in navigating periods of growth and development and achieving significant results on the field.

"Laura has always led by example and is a role model for cricketers throughout the country with her focus and dedication to Irish cricket.

“Laura will continue to play an important role within the squad, and she remains a vital part of the team.”

Gaby Lewis is the selectors choice to replace Delany, with Orla Prendergast confirmed as deputy. Both played a significant role in recent wins over Sri Lanka and England this summer.
