Ben Snell took the first wicket of the reply and came back for a second spell to take four more and finish the innings in double quick time, Laurelvale all out for 160 inside 40 overs. CI saw off a brave fight by Cliftonville Academy to win by 31 runs at Belmont. CI’s innings was dominated by a fourth wicket partnership of 144 between Chris Dougherty (77) and Charles Swart (81) and after both were out in the space of six balls, only 43 runs were scored in the final nine overs. It proved enough, however, because James Wright, only playing because he was ineligible to play in the Junior Cup final for the Seconds, removed the top three, in his first four overs, including CJ Klijnhans for 36 from 18 balls. CA captain Matthew McCord hit back with 44 from 30 balls and Dawood Khan hit a 40-ball 50 before Wright came back to remove him as well. Andrew Forbes kept it interesting, but he ran out of partners with 19 balls unused.

Laurelvale lost to CI by 3 wickets
Laurelvale, 25 July.
Laurelvale 103 (33.2 overs; A Malik 27; J Mulder 5-16, C McCullough 3-14)
CI 104-7 (24.4 overs; P Beverland 48, C Dougherty 33; J Speers 5-21)
CI scrambled over the line to beat Laurelvale by three wickets after losing five for 14 runs, all of them to John Speers. It looked plain sailing for another early finish at Laurelvale when CI were 84 for two, chasing 104 for victory but fourth bowler Speers took three wickets in the space of six balls, in his second and third overs, and then added two more to reduce CI to 98 for seven. But Jacob Mulder who had already claimed his own five-wicket haul, hit Speers for a boundary and a wide won the match in the next over. Speers’ first wicket ended the third wicket stand of 57 between Paddy Beverland and Chris Dougherty and when he had Beverland stumped two short of his half century, it set up a nervous finale. Only Adnan Malik passed 20 in Laurelvale’s innings but he was the fourth of Mulder’s five wickets, the Ireland international conceding just 16 runs in his 10 overs. Carson McCullough took three of the last five wickets as the basement side were bowled out in the 34th over.

The wickets ran out for Woodvale in their chase for CI’s 305 for nine, bowled out just 21 runs short with 16 balls unused. While Ashwin Shetty was in the middle, the visitors were on course for victory but when he gave a return catch to Satish Suresh, Woodvale were nine down with the total on 269. Shetty, who scored 52 from 45 balls with seven fours and a six, was the third player to hit a half-century. Earlier Ruhan Pretorius scored 72 and put on 71 for the fifth wicket with Finn Restieaux who hit eight boundaries in his 43 from 35 balls. Chris Dougherty, yet again, led the way for CI with 85 and captain John Matchett, Jack Beattie and Jacob Mulder with 30 off 19, all made significant contributions as they topped 300. Mulder also had the best bowing figures of the day, three for 35 in his 10 overs.

Instonians powered into the Challenge Cup final with a five-wicket demolition of CI, racing to 247 for five in only 25.3 overs. CI’s 246 was built around Jake Egan’s 94, with Chris Dougherty adding 42 and Charles Swart 45, but Andrew White claimed three wickets as the innings faded late. Instonians then launched a ferocious reply. Cade Carmichael struck 91 from 63 balls and Sully Gould blasted 78 from 38, the pair adding 117 for the second wicket. Shane Dadswell’s 37 from 15 balls kept the chase in overdrive as he cleared the ropes five times. There was a little cluster of wickets near the end to give the contest a closer feel than it was in reality. Inst will be favourites against CSNI as they look to end their 14-year drought in the Challenge Cup.

Chris Dougherty celebrated a landmark day in style, hitting 125 to pass 10,000 runs for CI as they beat Cliftonville Academy by 13 runs at Belmont. Dougherty shared a match-defining 225-run third-wicket stand with skipper John Matchett, who also made 124, helping CI recover from 34 for 2 to post 308 for 6. Cliftonville Academy almost pulled off a remarkable chase thanks to CP Klijnhans’ brilliant 165 from 116 balls, supported by Dawood Khan’s 62. However, Jacob Mulder’s 3 for 28 proved crucial as CI held their nerve to restrict the visitors to 295 for 9.

Civil Service North, playing their third game in three days, followed up their 10-over victory over Waringstown with an impressive 50 runs win over CI at Stormont. The result condemns CI to six games in the bottom four after the split. It was a steady rather than spectacular batting display by CSN as Ryan Hunter top scored with 37 and useful contributions by Jake Collingwood, Harry Dyer and Andrew Cowden. The home side won the game with just 10 men because returning professional Ashwin Hebbar went down with food poisoning and failed to make it to the ground. Sathish Suresh and Jacob Mulder each took three wickets for CI. Jake Egan led the reply with 64, including just five boundaries, but he still dominated the scoring, fourth out with the score on 116. Only Charles Swart with 36 gave him any support as all five bowlers CSN bowlers shared the wickets and they can now look forward to a game against the rest of the top six.

Charlie Simpson and Adam Walker (CricketEurope)
Fox Lodge advanced in the Ulster Plate with a five-wicket DLS victory over CI at Ballymagorry. CI were bowled out for 174 in 31.3 overs after a steady start was undone by Adam Walker’s decisive spell. Adam Maitland made 28 and Jonny Moore top-scored with 34, but from 76 for 1 the visitors slipped to 104 for 7 as Walker struck repeatedly. Zac Solomon’s unbeaten 24 and Ryan Armstrong’s 20 helped lift the total, though Walker’s 5 for 24, backed by Luke Hayes’ 2 for 25, kept Fox Lodge firmly in the contest. The reply began badly when Craig Doherty fell early to Ben Snell, who finished with 3 for 26, but Charlie Simpson anchored the chase superbly. He carried his bat for an unbeaten 64, with useful support from Jordan Cochrane, Luke Hayes and Swarnim Jha, as Fox Lodge reached their revised target in the 31st over.

Chris Dougherty continued his impressive form as CI finally got their second win of the season, defeating Laurelvale by 70 runs in a game reduced to 39 overs after a delayed start and a further rain break. There was still time for Dougherty to score 80 not out, from 63 balls, with eight fours and three sixes and with Carson McCullough adding 47 from 38 (two fours, four sixes), CI finished on 253 for six. Laurelvale needed a similar innings in their reply but opener John Speers with 40 was their top scorer and they never threatened a first Premier League win, finishing on 193 for seven.

CI eased into the last four after dismissing Laurelvale for 123, exactly half of the visitors’ total. Jake Egan showed why he was picked in the Ireland 14 for last month’s Test match with 36 off 90 balls, hitting just one boundary, but it laid the platform for a winning total. Chris Dougherty, not for the first time this season, top scored with 77 from 68 (four fours and five sixes) as CI plundered 58 from the last five overs despite losing four wickets. None of the Laurelvale batters reached 30 as left arm spinner Alex Armstrong ended with four wickets, the home side bowled out in the 44th over.

Most exciting game of the day was at Belmont were Instonians held on to beat CI by nine runs on a slow pitch. The visitors, without captain Nikolai Smith who was playing for the Seconds, despite being put into bat made a good start reaching 97 for one, but Jacob Mulder ended the stand by trapping Sully Gould lbw for 30 and when Carson McCullough had Jack Dickson caught by Mulder for 38, Instonians collapsed from 99 from three to 159 all out in the space of 16 overs, McCullough finishing with four wickets. In contrast, CI had a nightmare start, losing their top five for 48 – captain for the day Shane Dadswell taking three of the wickets for just 11 runs in nine overs - with Paddy Beverland the only batter in double figures. It looked game over at 79 for seven but first Adam McCormick and then Mulder edged them closer but when the last pair came together Alex Armstrong and Ben Snell still needed 35. They had got the target down to 10 off 10 balls when Andrew White tempted Snell to lob one back to give Instonians the victory which keeps the defending champions just four points off the lead.

Player of the Match Chris Dougherty (George Armstrong)
CI booked their place in the last eight of the Challenge Cup with a six wickets victory over North Down at Comber. A typical rearguard innings of 67 balls by Chris Dougherty won the tie in the 37th over while wickets fell around him, in their chase for a victory target of just 145. The one-time Ireland international won the match with his second six but although they had slumped to 101 for six, captain John Matchett had held himself back to No 8 and finished 24 not out. In contrast to CI’s strong finish, North Down lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs after the dismissal of professional Mike Erlank for 39, the first of four dismissals for Carson McCullough. He was on a hat-trick when he bowled captain Tyron Koen for 31 with the first ball of his next over. Tom Crothers denied him that but he got his man in the next over and international Craig Young made it a four-for. There was an identical scenario in the CI innings when McCullough was lbw to his first ball from Jacob McClure-Dalzell but Satish Suresh foiled the hat-trick.

Carson McCullough made a valuable 38 and Jack Beattie contributed an important 25 as CI built a strong total. For North Down, Jacob McClure-Dalzell and Craig Young claimed two wickets each. When Waringstown lost three quick wickets to collapse to 159 for eight, such a total seemed out of reach but James Cameron Dow – Sam Topping’s replacement – hit an unbeaten 45 in a ninth wicket stand of 106 to give the visitors a competitive total. When Mayes and Hume reduced CI to 21 for three, they were in control but Chris Dougherty’s 70 (six fours, three sixes) kept the hosts in touch. A seventh wicket stand of 50 between Satish Suresh and Jack Snell got them to within 61 runs of victory but Mayes cleaned up the tail.

A match-winning century from Lisburn skipper Neil Whitworth
A century from Neil Whitworth steered Lisburn to a comfortable seven wickets victory over CI at Belmont. Chasing 232 for victory in 49 overs – one over was lost to rain - the captain finished 109 not out as the visitors won with 50 balls to spare. Ross Adair got them off to the usual fast start with 47 from 33 balls (six fours, three sixes) and Whitworth then put on 112 for the third wicket with James Hunter. After deciding to bat first, CI made the perfect start, Jack Egan and new signing Paddy Beverland putting on 110 for the first wicket. But they then lost six wickets for 32 runs and despite 38 from Carson McCullough they were bowled out for 230, new Lisburn professional Jon Hinrichsen taking an expensive three wickets and Whitworth the same number at almost half the cost.
