Gaby Lewis was still ‘buzzing’ from Wednesday’s ODI victory over England when she sat down to preview Ireland’s back-to-back T20 internationals against the same opposition at Clontarf this weekend.

Asked whether her Girls in Green could beat the near neighbours again, the stand-in skipper was in no doubt.

“Definitely! Especially with it being the shorter format we’re full of confidence. I’m looking forward to a 2-0 series win!” she said.

Her optimism is admirable given England are a much stronger team —and dismissed Ireland for a record low ODI score of 45 as recently as Monday — but Lewis knows momentum and character count for a lot.

“The win has given us a huge boost. If we’d suffered another defeat going into the T20 series it would have put us on a bit of a down. Now the defeat is at the back of our minds and all we can remember is the buzz from Wednesday.

“This is a young squad and we’ve only been in that situation a handful of times, so although there was a bit of panic towards the end, it was great to get over the line.

“We’re looking to bring that positivity into these two games over the weekend and especially as it was a shortened [22 overs] game it gives us that confidence going into the T20s.”

Ironically, Alana Dalzell who stuck the winning boundary from the final ball of the thriller drops out of the squad, along with Joanna Loughran, to make way for Christina Coulter Reilly, on her home ground, and Ava Canning.

Win or lose, Lewis knows that her side are making great strides under the guidance of coach Ed Joyce, with a first ODI series victory over Sri Lanka under their belts last month.

“We’ve put in some great performances over the past 12-18 months, and we’ve played with a smile on our faces,” Lewis said.

“Everyone is aware that we’re role models for young girls coming into the game. There are a lot of youngsters at our matches and it would be great if we could inspire them to go home and want to pick up a bat, or a ball.”
