Will Smale was smiling after Glamorgan triumphed by 15 runs against Somerset to lift the One-Day Cup at Trent Bridge.

The 23-year-old hit five fours and a six in a 14-ball 28 to help the Welsh side recover from a poor start to make 186 for 7, and then took two catches as Somerset were restricted to 171 for 6.

Smale played seven times for the North-West Warriors in 2019 and 2020, taking five catches in a game against Leinster Lightning.

He was also part of the Ireland Under 19 squad that played in the 2019 World Cup Qualifiers, and played locally in the North West with Coleraine during the Covid-ravaged season of 2020.

Despite his undoubted promise, Smale soon fell out of favour, with one Irish Coach very scathing of his ability.

Ireland's loss was Glamorgan's gain with the keeper/batsman signing a professional two year-contract after completing his degree at Cardiff University.
