Scotland had a successful start to the latest CWC League 2 ODI tri-series in the USA with a thumping win over the hosts, but it soon left the headlines after the latest off-field dramas in US cricket.
WIthin hours of the defeat, Stuart Law was removed as head coach only six months after taking up the post. In his brief tenure he led USA to their first series win over a full-member - 2-1 over Bangladesh - and to the Super EIght stage of the World Cup after a famous Super Over win over Pakistan.
Esteemed US cricket journalist Peter Della Penna reported that a rift had developed between Law and US captain Monank Patel during the World Cup when Law wanted to replace the injured captain in the US squad after he injured his shoulder whilst celebrating the win over Pakistan at the World Cup. Instead, Patel remained with the squad depsite not being fit to play.
A successful tour of the Netherlands, including a sweep of the four ODIs, in August seemed to have only papered over the cracks, with Patel amongst a group of seven players alleging discrimination by Law. The exact nature of the complaint has not been revealed.
The news rendered the crushing defeat by Scotland a mere footnote to the day's events in Texas. The home side collapsed to 59-8 - at one point losing four wickets for no runs - before 58 by Shadley van Schalkwyk gave a modicum of respectability to the USA total of 144. Brad Currie was the pick of the Scottish bowlers with 4-32 whilst Brandon McMullen took 3-20.
Andy Umeed hits out during his innings (Cricket Scotland)
Scotland made short work of their run chase with Charlie Tear and Andy Umeed chasing it down in 24.5 overs to win by ten wickets. Umeed was just short of a century with 98 from 79 balls. Tear was more sedate, scoring his 43 runs from 70 deliveries.
USA take on Nepal in the next match of the tri-series on Sunday, with the Nepalis having swept them 3-0 in a T20I series that led into this tri-series. Scotland next play on Tuesday, also against Nepal.
