Ireland U19s ended their World Cup on Friday with a crushing 191-run defeat by Afghanistan at the Harare Sports Club.

A massive 163 from Faisal Shinozada put the youngsters to the sword and although opening bowlers Reuben Wilson and Olly Riley took three wickets each, four of them came in the last 16 balls of an Afghanistan innings that closed on 315-7.

After the chase had stumbled to 53-5, Wilson gave it some respectability with 31 and Marko Bates made a top score of 34 before Ireland were bowled out for 124.

Skipper Riley looked back on his side’s campaign with a mixture of pride but also feelings of missed opportunities having won only one of their five games in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

“At times we’ve dominated and fully looked the part, but I don’t feel that we’ve done ourselves justice,” Riley said.

“The biggest takeaway for me has been that simple cricket is the best cricket, no matter what level you’re playing at, or who you’re playing. If you can do the basics well, stick to your plans, the better you get your basics the further you’ll get.”

Meanwhile, umpire Roly Black will become the first Irishman to stand in a World Cup when he officiates in next month’s T20 event in India and Sri Lanka.
