After almost 17 years of trying, plucky underdogs England have finally recorded a win over a European side at the T20 World Cup.

With previous defeats against Netherlands and Ireland as well as games where they were arguably saved by the rain against Ireland and Scotland, they were able to fight off Scotland today at Eden Gardens.

Put into bat, Scotland lost two wickets to Jofra Archer in the third over, but 33 from 20 balls by Michael Jones prevented any major worries at the start.

After Jones' dismissal, captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce added 71 for the third wicket before Bruce was dismissed for 24. Berrington followed for 49 shortly afterwards as Scotland went from 113-3 to 127-8 in the space of 21 balls.

An unbeaten 20 from 15 balls by number nine Oliver Davidson gave Scotland more of a cushion than they perhaps deserved as they reached 152 before the final wicket fell. Adil Rashid was the pick of their bowlers with 3-36.

Like Scotland earlier, England lost their first two wickets early in their innings, but recovered with a 66 run partnership for the third wicket between Jacob Bethall and Tom Banton, that ended when Bethell was dismissed for 32.

Unlike Scotland though, there was no collapse for the English side with Banton finishing unbeaten on 63 from 41 balls as his team completed a five wicket win with ten balls to spare.

Scotland will round out their round robin stage on Tuesday with a game against Nepal, whilst England will do so on Monday against Italy. Whilst its fantastic that England have the opportunity to play two European sides in this tournament, perhaps they should play more matches against European teams between World Cups so that they can have more days like today in the future?
