Cosgrave Century Leads Irish Universities to Famous Fenner's Victory

A magnificent century from Macdara Cosgrave inspired Irish Universities to a memorable 124-run victory over Cambridge University at Fenner's, securing their first win against the hosts since 2018 and levelling the head-to-head record in 50-over encounters at five wins apiece.

After being asked to bat, Irish Universities posted an imposing 261 for 7 from their allotted 48 overs, a total built around a superb third-wicket partnership of 168 between Cosgrave and Daniel Forkin. The pair arrived at the crease with their side in early trouble at 35 for two, but transformed the innings with a stand that occupied 29 overs and wrestled complete control from the home side.

Both batsmen came into the match in excellent form after recent centuries in the Siggins Cup, and they continued that rich vein at one of cricket's most famous venues.

Pembroke batter Cosgrave was the dominant force, compiling a classy 102 from 121 deliveries, striking eight boundaries in an innings of patience and authority. The century places him alongside a select group of Irish Universities batters to have reached three figures in the Hone/McGregor Trophy at Fenner's.

Cosgrave's century is the fourth recorded by an Irish Universities player in the Hone/McGregor Trophy at Fenner's, following scores by Cormac McLoughlin-Gavin (125 not out against Scottish Universities in 2015), Gareth Delany (125 against Scottish Universities in 2017) and Gavin Hoey's 124 against Cambridge in a T20 contest in 2022.

Forkin provided ideal support, making 68 from 83 balls and clearing the ropes twice in a composed knock. A late flourish from Jamie Forbes further boosted the total, the hard-hitting all-rounder crashing an unbeaten 28 from just 18 deliveries to ensure Irish Universities finished strongly.

Cambridge's bowlers were led by Arjun Rajkumar, who claimed 3 for 25, while Colin Mitchell took 2 for 50.

With weather interruptions reducing Cambridge's chase, the target was revised to 232 from 37 overs. However, the home side never seriously threatened the required rate and were dismissed for just 107 in 27.3 overs.

Abhinav Ramisetty top-scored with 23, but the Irish Universities attack delivered an outstanding collective performance. Yash Balasubramanium was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 40, while Mark Tonge (2 for 14) and John McNally (2 for 20) provided excellent support as wickets fell regularly.

The emphatic victory was a fitting reward for an impressive all-round display and another memorable chapter in Irish Universities cricket history.
