Aimee Maguire took four wickets to spur Ireland to a morale-boosting 11-run victory over Bangladesh in Loughborough yesterday and lived up to her captain’s billing as one to watch in the T20 World Cup which gets underway later this week.

Skipper Gaby Lewis was spot on in her tournament preview when she picked out the 19-year-old left-arm spinner from The Hills as someone who has made great progress after remodelling her bowling action.

“Aimee has been brilliant for us over the last couple of years,” Lewis said. “We don’t just rely on one or two players though, we’ve got a real group of match-winners now.”

Her second point was underlined as Ireland recovered from 43-4 against the Tigers to post a competitive 143-9 in the warm-up match.

With the big guns all back in the pavilion, Rebecca Stokell steadied the ship with 30 before a momentum-swinging last-wicket partnership of 31 from 14 balls between Ava Canning and Christina Coulter Reilly..

Canning, the 22-year-old who was Player of the Series against the West Indies and Pakistan last week, smashed 20 off the last five balls, including two sixes.

The Leinster all-rounder followed up with 1-19 and with Maguire working her way through the Bangladesh line-up to finish with 4-20, the Tigers were restricted to 132-6.

Ireland begin their T20 World Cup campaign on Saturday against Scotland at Old Trafford, followed by group matches against England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
