Aimee Maguire will draw confidence from one of the finest performances of her young international career when Ireland take on hosts England later today in their second match of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The Hills left-arm spinner produced career-best figures of 5 for 19 against England in a one-day international in 2024 and will be hoping for a repeat performance as Ireland look to bounce back from their disappointing opening defeat to Scotland.

Despite the heavy loss, Maguire insists the squad remains upbeat and determined to make a statement against one of the tournament favourites.

The teenager, who made her senior international debut almost three years ago to the day, believes the experience of competing on the world stage is something the squad is embracing together.

“I’ve definitely been enjoying the whole World Cup experience so far,” said Maguire.

“Obviously it wasn’t ideal with the loss against Scotland to start with, but the experience around that including prep has been enjoyable. It’s a first World Cup for a few of us so it’s nice being able to embrace it together.”

Ireland know they will need a significant improvement against an England side playing in front of home support, but Maguire says the setback against Scotland has only strengthened the group’s resolve.

“We’re definitely feeling both determined and ready to bounce back,” she added.

“While it wasn’t an ideal start to the tournament, as a squad we are resilient and ready for our next game.

“Playing the home team next in a big tournament is definitely something to look forward to and can’t wait to show our family and friends what we can do against one of the best sides in the world.”

Ireland will need all of that resilience against a strong England outfit, but if Maguire can rediscover the form that brought her five wickets against today’s opponents, Ireland may yet spring a surprise and reignite their World Cup campaign.
