Hunter century puts Emerging Knights firmly in control

Ryan Hunter struck a magnificent unbeaten century as the Emerging Knights seized control against Leinster Lightning Bolts on the opening day of their two-day encounter at Belmont.

The CSNI wicketkeeper produced a fluent 103 not out from 98 deliveries, hitting 18 fours and a six as the Knights closed on 225 for three, already 40 runs ahead of the Bolts’ first-innings total of 185.

Hunter’s commanding knock capped an excellent day for the Stormont contingent, with club colleague Adam Leckey earlier returning superb figures of three for 31 as the Bolts were dismissed for an under-par total.

Evan Carlisle gave the Knights the perfect start by removing Bruce Whaley for five and Rob O’Brien for 12, leaving the Bolts 25 for two.

Daniel Forkin led the recovery with a patient 53 from 91 balls, while Daniel Murray contributed 45 from 73 deliveries. However, wickets continued to fall regularly as the Knights maintained pressure throughout the innings.

Adam removed Murray, Reuben Wilson and Yash Balasubramanium, conceding only 31 runs. Finn Lutton also claimed two wickets, while Carson McCullough, Harry Dyer and James West took one apiece.

The Knights lost Seb Yeates for 18 in reply before James West made a steady 34. Hunter then took charge, sharing a 68-run third-wicket partnership with Charles Swart, whose brisk 32 included five fours.

When Swart fell with the score on 153, Hunter continued to dominate alongside Marko Bates. Their unbroken stand of 72 carried the Knights into a strong position at stumps.

Hunter’s century came from 97 balls and ensured the Knights finished the day firmly on top. With seven first-innings wickets still intact and a useful lead already secured, they will look to press home their advantage early on the second morning of the contest.

Leinster face a battle to survive, but you get the feeling that they have the quality and depth to do just that.
