Letterkenny’s miserable Championship campaign ended with a 14th successive league defeat as Burndennett completed a six-wicket victory, the Donegal side's immediate return to League One having been confirmed earlier in the month.

There was at least some early encouragement for Letterkenny as Sohel Shaik counter-attacked with an excellent 61 from just 33 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes.

However, wickets fell regularly around him and, despite Wasiq Riaz adding a useful 35, Letterkenny were dismissed for 197 in 42.2 overs.

Mo Saghir led the Burndennett attack with four wickets, while Martin Mahaffey claimed three as the visitors again failed to bat through their allocation.

Burndennett’s chase was measured rather than spectacular, with the top order ensuring the target was always under control.

Mark Doherty made 38 and Mahaffey 33 before Usman Azhar added 31 and captain Andrew Barr 29. Letterkenny briefly threatened to make a contest of it when Burndennett slipped from 79 without loss to 81 for two, but there was never any sustained pressure.

Ryan Barr finished unbeaten on 23 alongside Corey Roulston as Burndennett coasted home.

The result leaves Letterkenny down after a season without a league victory.

North Fermanagh still look the most likely side to replace them in the Championship, although the Kesh club will have to wait at least another week after suffering defeat against Bready Seconds.

Aaron Cooke was the difference in that contest, his hard-hit century that included nine sixes and fours ensuring the promotion celebrations were put temporarily on hold.
