Clontarf left frustrated in landmark 150th year

Clontarf’s 150th anniversary season ultimately proved a disappointing one on the field, with the Castle Avenue side unable to produce the sustained challenge they would have hoped for in such a significant year.

It was a campaign disrupted by injuries and availability issues, and although there were some notable individual performances, Clontarf never quite found the consistency needed to turn promise into silverware.

Their batting was led by overseas professional Sam Morgan, who enjoyed an excellent season with 637 runs at an average of 39.81. His tally included a century, four fifties and a highest score of 136, making him the standout run-scorer in a campaign where Clontarf often relied heavily on their leading order.

Eoghan Delany was another consistent performer, scoring 504 runs at 38.77, while Fionn Hand added 491 runs and also made a significant contribution with the ball. Seamus Lynch compiled 440 runs, while David Delany was especially impressive when available, scoring 415 runs at 37.73 from just 11 innings, including a superb 172.

The difficulty was maintaining that quality consistently throughout the side. Injuries and player availability prevented Clontarf from settling into a rhythm, and that lack of continuity was reflected across the season.

Hand led the bowling attack with 26 wickets at 26.42, while Cillian McDonnell took 18 and John McNally 17. Nawaz Khan claimed 16 wickets at 25.44, while David Delany again showed his all-round value with 15 wickets at 23.73. Reuben Wilson also impressed, taking 14 wickets at an excellent average of 22.21.

There was enough depth in the bowling to compete, but Clontarf never quite managed to put all the pieces together for long enough.

That will have been particularly frustrating in a year when the club was celebrating a century and a half of history. The anniversary provided plenty of reason for celebration off the field, but there was comparatively little to mark in terms of trophies as they finished third in the Championship, failing to make the top six Premiership split.

The challenge now is to regroup, get key players fit and available, and turn the individual quality evident throughout the squad into a more sustained collective effort. For one of Leinster cricket’s most established clubs, 2026 will be remembered more for the milestone than the medals.
