Bernard O'MaraA new book about cricket in the county of Carlow is being published next month. The Annals of Cricket in Carlow is an historic catalogue of games that were played in Carlow from the early 19th century up until today. It includes the stories of the influential people of cricket in the area, the many incidents and anecdotes that happened to teams & people through their association with the game, as well as the runs and the wickets of cricket matches in the county.

The book also reflects on Irish politics of the day, and how national politics affected cricket in Ireland & in Carlow over the past 200 years. This book hopes to give readers a greater sense of the vast length and breadth that cricket has had in the sports and pastimes of people in Carlow.

Book coverThere has been a gap of over 40 years since the last published book about cricket in Carlow, written by Norman McMillan & Des called One Hundred And Fifty Years of Cricket and Sport in County Carlow, published in 1983, and The Annals updates those years for Bagenalstown CC, which has continuously played cricket over those decades.

It is especially more pertinent to write an updated history of cricket in Carlow due to the re-establishment of Carlow CC in 2011, so the new story of Carlow CC can also be recorded, while at the same time highlight to the members of today the influence of the County Club back in the early 19th century.

The author is Bernard O'Mara, who has been a member of Bagenalstown CC since 2005, and is certified in many aspects of cricket including coaching, scoring, umpiring, and cricket groundskeeping.

A book launch will take place at the Lord Bagenal Inn (R93 E189) on Thursday 15th October at 7:30pm, with the MC for the night being Cillian Doyle of Beat 102/103 radio.
