Woodvale left with plenty to ponder after season to forget
Woodvale will want to draw a line under a thoroughly miserable 2026 campaign after a season which saw the Ballygomartin Road side tumble to ninth in the NCU Premiership.

After several promising campaigns in recent years, hopes would have been considerably higher, but consistency proved elusive and a troubling year both on and off the field ultimately left them above only promoted Laurelvale.
Indeed, the season ended on an appropriately bleak note when Laurelvale recorded just their second Premiership victory, beating Woodvale by seven wickets after dismissing them for 167.
There were, however, some notable individual performances. Captain Ruhan Pretorius was comfortably their outstanding player, scoring 834 runs at an average of 52.12 with three centuries and five half-centuries. His unbeaten 126 was one of several innings in which he carried a heavy responsibility.
Ludwig Kaestner also enjoyed an excellent campaign, making 648 runs at 49.85, including an unbeaten 125, while Harry Warke contributed 543 runs with a century and four fifties.
Francis Collins added 383 runs, including a hundred, but thereafter the returns dropped away significantly. Finn Restieaux was the only other batter to pass 200 runs, making 281 at just 16.53, highlighting how heavily Woodvale depended on their leading quartet.
There were occasional reminders of what the side was capable of. They inflicted an early league defeat on defending champions Instonians, while a 10-wicket demolition of Cliftonville Academy briefly revived hopes of a top-six finish.
Their Irish Senior Cup run also provided some respite. Woodvale smashed 428 for five against Bready, with Warke, Collins and Kaestner all making centuries, before Pretorius produced a superb all-round display — six for 23 and an unbeaten 51 — to eliminate holders Balbriggan. Their run eventually ended against Leinster despite another magnificent unbeaten 126 from Pretorius.
Those highlights, though, were too isolated. Heavy defeats, missed opportunities and a lack of depth contributed to a campaign that steadily unravelled. Losing twice to Laurelvale, including the final game of the season, summed up just how far Woodvale had slipped.
After a period in which the club appeared to be moving firmly in the right direction, 2026 represented a significant backward step. The task for Woodvale now is not simply to improve results in 2027, but to restore some stability and momentum to a club that endured a season few at Ballygomartin Road will remember with any affection.
