Ireland U19s bounce back with emphatic nine-wicket win
Ireland Under-19s responded in convincing fashion to their opening tour defeat as they swept aside a much weaker Potch XI by nine wickets in a one-sided contest.
After being well beaten in their first outing, Ireland were far sharper second time around, dismissing the hosts for 172 before cruising to their target in just 28.1 overs for the loss of a single wicket.
William Shields was the pick of the attack, claiming four for 18 from five overs as Potch struggled to build any meaningful momentum. He struck early to remove Ulrich Botha for eight and captain Sihle Duma for 13, while Fintan McCarthy also made an immediate impact by dismissing Lukas Kotze for a duck.
Olebogeng Scott and Riekert Kruger briefly steadied the innings with 25 and 26 respectively, but Ruben Sanders removed both as the hosts continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.
Potch were helped considerably by Ireland’s lack of discipline, with 44 extras making a sizeable contribution to the total. That included 26 wides and three no-balls, an area Ireland will still want to tighten up despite the comfortable victory.
Shields returned to finish off the lower order, while McCarthy, Sanders and Ted Hasler all collected two wickets apiece as Potch were bowled out in 37.3 overs.
The chase could hardly have been more straightforward. Ardmore's Bobby Brolly and Railway Union all-rounder Hasler dominated from the outset, putting together a huge opening stand of 172 that completely removed any prospect of an upset.
Brolly struck 63 before being stumped with the scores level, while Hasler produced the innings of the match with an unbeaten 92. The opener controlled proceedings throughout, ensuring Ireland stayed well ahead of the rate as the target was steadily reduced.
Captain Sidharth Biju arrived only to watch the winning run completed without having to face, Ireland easing home with almost 22 overs unused.
After the disappointment of their opening defeat, this was exactly the response Ireland would have wanted. The opposition was significantly less demanding, but there was still plenty to encourage the tourists — particularly the form of Hasler, Brolly and Shields.
The challenge now will be to reproduce the same clinical approach when the standard rises again later in the trip with their next game scheduled for Thursday.
