Zimbabwe stint offers Irish umpires valuable experience

Irish international umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black are heading to Zimbabwe this winter to broaden their experience through an ICC-backed exchange programme.

Morrison is already in Harare, where he is officiating in two four-day matches between Ireland Wolves and Zimbabwe A, the first of which got under way today at Harare Sports Club.

Black will follow in January, standing in two domestic first-class fixtures.

The appointments provide an important opportunity for the pair, with Ireland's lack of domestic red-ball cricket restricting their chances to officiate in the longer format. Cricket Ireland's Match Officials Manager Phil Thompson welcomed the initiative and thanked Zimbabwe Cricket for its support.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wonder Chisango, General Manager of Cricket Affairs of Zimbabwe Cricket, for his help ensuring these appointments were possible," said Thompson.

"With the lack of red-ball domestic cricket in Ireland, it is important that our umpires gain experience where they can, and we are grateful to Zimbabwe Cricket for facilitating us in this endeavour."

The exchange also strengthens ties between the two cricketing nations while giving Morrison and Black an opportunity to further their development on the international stage.
