North West trio named in Ireland squad for Emerging Nations Trophy

Three North West cricketers have been included in Ireland Women's squad for next week's ICC Emerging Nations Trophy in the UAE, with Eglinton all-rounder Zara Craig earning her first senior international call-up.

The 23-year-old joins Bready's Alana Dalzell and Coleraine spinner Kia McCartney in the 14-player squad for the ten-team tournament, which takes place from November 12-25.

Craig's selection is another significant milestone for the talented seam-bowling all-rounder, who has progressed through Ireland's underage pathway and was part of the squad at the 2023 Under-19 Women's World Cup. The Eglinton and Phoenix player will be hoping to make her senior debut as Ireland tackle Sri Lanka, hosts UAE, Papua New Guinea and Scotland in Group A.

Dalzell brings valuable experience to the travelling party, having established herself in the senior international set-up and featured at this summer's T20 World Cup in England.

McCartney, meanwhile, has already earned five ODI caps, including appearances against England in September, but is still awaiting her T20 international debut. The Coleraine off-spinner impressed during that England series, claiming two wickets in the second ODI at Derby, and will be hoping for further opportunities in the UAE.

Ireland will be captained by Gaby Lewis, with Amy Hunter taking over the vice-captaincy in the absence of Orla Prendergast, who has been given permission to play in Australia's Women's Big Bash League.

Waringstown wicketkeeper Abbi Harrison is another uncapped newcomer, while experienced all-rounder Lara Maritz returns to international duty after a five-year absence. Ireland open against Sri Lanka next Thursday before facing UAE the following day, Papua New Guinea on November 16 and Scotland on November 18. The top three teams from each group progress to the Super Six stage, with the final scheduled for November 25.

For the North West trio, it represents a welcome opportunity to make their mark on the international stage.
