Namibia face World Cup last-chance showdown as Nepal hosts qualifying battle

Namibia face a fight to keep their World Cup dreams alive after being drawn alongside seven rivals in next month's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Playoff in Nepal.

Having missed out on automatic qualification for the next stage to Oman on net run rate, Namibia must now navigate another demanding tournament to stay on course for the 2027 finals.

Eight nations will battle for just four places in the Global Qualifier during the round-robin competition from December 4-21.

Hosts Nepal, Italy, Uganda, Canada, Kuwait, Jersey and the United Arab Emirates complete the field, with matches staged at Tribhuvan University and Upper Mulpani in Kathmandu.

Namibia open against Uganda on December 4, when Nepal also face Italy, before meeting their European opponents two days later. The Eagles' campaign includes potentially decisive encounters with Canada, UAE and hosts Nepal, the latter fixture scheduled for December 18.

There is little margin for error, with all eight teams playing each other once and only the top four progressing.

Ireland, West Indies, USA, Scotland, Netherlands and Oman have already secured their places in the ten-team Global Qualifier. Ireland and West Indies qualified through their ICC rankings, while the other four advanced from World Cup League 2.

The stakes will rise further at the Global Qualifier, where the winners secure direct passage to the World Cup group stage, while the next three teams enter the newly created Super Series.

ICC General Manager of Events and Operations Gaurav Saxena believes the playoff will provide another showcase for the emerging nations.

"The Qualifier Play-off is a crucial stage in the pathway to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, and I am sure all eight teams will be eager to seize this opportunity and secure a place in the next stage," he said. "The progress these teams have shown in recent years is encouraging, and I am confident we will witness some exciting and competitive cricket."

For Namibia, the pressure is particularly intense. Despite being co-hosts of the 2027 tournament alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe, they have no automatic place in the finals. With the tournament expanding to 14 teams and 57 matches from October 2 to November 21, Namibia will be desperate to ensure they are part of the action on home soil.
