At the last edition of this tournament, Thailand were one of the form teams. When the tournament was abandoned due to the emergence of the omicron Covid-19 variant, they were almost certain of a place in the ICC Women's Championship and in prime position to qualify for the World Cup itself. The ICC's decision to then use rankings to decide qualification unfairly eliminated them.

On the strength of their first game this tournament though, they are far from a possibility for qualification after a drubbing at the hands of Bangladesh today in Lahore.

Thailand won the toss and asked their opponents to bat first. Ishma Tanjim was dismissed early before Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter added 104 for the second wicket.

Hoque was next out for 53 before Akhter and Nigar Sultana added another 152 to take the total to 271-3, with the third wicket - Sultana - falling from the last delivery of their 50 overs. Akhter scored 94 whilst Sultana was able to score her first ODI century with 101 from 80 balls.

In reply, Thailand were bundled out for just 93 to lose by 178 runs. Fahima Khatun (5-21) and Jannatul Ferdus (5-7) were the wicket takers for the Bangladeshis. Remarkably, in the entire history of ODIs that is only the second time in either men's or women's ODIs that two bowlers have both taken five wickets.

Thailand will next be in action on Sunday against fellow associates Scotland. Bangladesh also play next on Sunday when they take on Ireland.
