Downpatrick Cricket Club Ready for Exciting Season in NCU Senior League Section 1

Downpatrick Cricket Club is gearing up for an exciting and competitive season as they step into the Northern Cricket Union Senior League Section 1 following their promotion last year. With high expectations and a strong squad, the club is optimistic about making a significant impact in their new league.

Club Manager Ravi Ningegowda expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, highlighting the return of last year's overseas professional, Marco Wyngard. "Marco was phenomenal last year, finishing as the highest run-scorer in the league and one of the quick wicket keeper. His return is a massive boost for us, and we have high hopes that he will continue his excellent form," said Ningegowda. Wyngard’s achievements extend beyond Downpatrick, as he recently in the last few days led his home club, Victoria Cricket Club in South Africa, to premier league promotion, further cementing his credentials as a top-class player.

Downpatrick’s 1st XI remains intact from last season, ensuring stability and continuity within the team. In addition, the squad has been strengthened by the arrivals of Byron Woodruff from Saintfield Cricket Club and Rahul Sodhi from Dundrum Cricket Club, both of whom bring valuable allround experience and skills to the side.

The club’s committee, responsible for overseeing both on-field and off-field operations, remains unchanged from last year, with a clear vision to continue strengthening the club’s foundations. "We are committed to making the club stronger in all aspects," added Ningegowda.

Downpatrick CC’s journey to Section 1 is nothing short of a miracle, considering the club was on the verge of closing after the impact of Covid. Thanks to the dedication and relentless efforts of individuals working behind the scenes, the club has not only survived but thrived. Special mention goes to All the players, Jeffrey Maguire (Junior Convenor), Jack McClernon (Chairman), Correna (Treasurer), Jeremy McCready (Groundsman), Ravi Ningegowda (Club manager & Social media Manager) and Chris Gilmore (Secretary) for their invaluable contributions to the club’s success playing a key part in promoting and strengthening the club.

Additionally, Downpatrick CC runs a packed local school program aimed at encouraging youngsters to take up cricket, further cementing the club’s commitment to nurturing future talent. A huge thanks also goes to Gavin Ringland, Lee Anne, and Audrey, who are dedicating their time and effort to junior coaching, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Downpatrick Cricket Club.

Downpatrick CC established in 1849 is on course to return to its former glory, with increasing numbers of spectators attending matches, especially club patrons. The club’s performances last season were impressive, losing only three matches by just one or two runs. A defining moment came in their final game when they defeated league champions Bangor Cricket Club, securing crucial momentum heading into this season.

With the squad eager to take on the challenge of their newly promoted league, both players and supporters are filled with anticipation for the season ahead. The club is determined to make a mark in Section 1 and is hopeful of achieving even greater success.

As the season approaches, Downpatrick Cricket Club looks forward to showcasing their talent and commitment, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come their way.

Adding to the excitement, the flagship Royal Challengers Belfast's Royal Premier League 2025 tournament is set to return to former international venue Downpatrick CC once again in September 2025 for the fourth consecutive year. This prestigious event attracts numerous teams from England, Scotland and features some of the biggest premier league players, further enhancing Downpatrick CC’s reputation as a top cricketing venue confirmed Ravi Ningegowda.
