The Northern Knights will be without Irish internationals Paul Stirling and their captain Mark Adair for the season opener against the NW Warriors at Stormont on Wednesday (10:45am).

Stirling has an ongoing tennis elbow injury but is expected to return to action next week, while Adair has just returned to bowling with his workload being managed ahead of the West Indies series in two weeks' time.

The other absentee is Ben Calitz, who underwent an emergency appendix operation during Ireland Wolves recent tour of the UAE, and isn't back in action for a time yet.

Instonians Neil Rock takes the captain's armband with the left-hander in supreme form following his record T20 knock on 173 against CSNI last week.

The Warriors are also missing players with Graham Hume injured, as well as the unavailable Sam Willemse and Ryan Macbeth.

There are a few new faces in their squad with Ireland Test captain Andrew Balbirnie chalking up the miles as he travels northwards, filling the gap left by Stephen Doheny's migration to Munster.

Gavin Roulston will undergo a fitness test on his elbow, after being struck on it by a Jared Wilson drive at training. The Bready left-hander missed the Premiership match with Ardmore on Saturday after scoring an opening day century.

Defending champions Leinster Lightning start with a home clash against Munster Reds at Oak Hill, also on Wednesday.

Lorcan Tucker has taken over the captaincy reins from George Dockrell, while Gavin Hoey will be his deputy.

A combination of availabity issues, examinations and injuries mean that Lightning are missing quite a number of their original squad including Josh Little - Pakistan Super League and Middlesex commitments - as well as Fionn Hand, Seamus Lynch and Reuben Wilson.

Still, they have six senior internationals in their ranks, with Tucker one of five Pembroke players in the 13-man squad.

Munster are missing skipper Curtis Campher who is also away at the Pakistan Super League, so will be led by Gareth Delany.

Stephen Doheny will look to build on his opening partnership at Merrion with Swapnil Modgill, with the apir adding 173 in their win at The Hills on Monday.

Much will be expected of Ben White and Liam McCarthy, and if the pair can fire then Jeremy Bray's side could well cause a few problems.
