FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

One tradition of Ireland internationals over the past year has been the ringing of the ‘Roy Torrens bell’ to signify the start of play. Named in memory of the great man, who was a colossus of the sport at every level starting as a player in 1966 until he retired as Manager following the 2015 World Cup.

Three former Ireland international greats from the North West will be given the privilege of ringing the bell this week; Boyd Rankin from Bready, Ossie Colhoun of Sion Mills, and Strabane’s Peter Gillespie. Between them the trio won a combined 364 caps – an incredible achievement for the Tyrone trio.

“It’s a real honour for me as Roy was a legend in North West and Irish cricket,” said Gillespie, who won 124 caps before retiring shortly after the 2007 World Cup.

“It’s a great testament to his memory having the bell to ring at every match. He was a massive part of my Irish cricketing journey and there was a massive connection with him being from the North West as well, and he helped me a lot in my later international years.

“As well as being the manager, he was a great friend, confidant and sounding board to all the players. That’s not forgotten by all the players, and it’s a testament to his legacy of just how highly all the players speak of him, having spent so much time travelling all around the world.

“For me, it’s great to remember him always, and to ring his bell on Sunday is a great honour and a great tribute to him.”
