MOONEY MISSES END OF SEASON WITH STRABANE

Strabane went a long way to ensuring Premiership survival with a vital three-wicket win at Eglinton at the weekend, the result even more impressive in that it was achieved without the services of their talismanic Head Coach John Mooney who had flown to the UAE.

"I've got a fielding coach role with Afghanistan who have an upcoming tri-series with Pakistan and the UAE, which is leading into next month's Asia Cup" said Mooney.

"Following that they have series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe so it's a pretty busy schedule until the New Year. It's a short[term contract so it's pretty much a case of see how things go. It's great to be back with them, and Jonathan Trott is the Head Coach. I know a few players from my last time here, but there are quite a few new, younger faces too. This is a much fitter and agile squad than previously, and it's an exciting time for them and me. I'm really looking forward to the role. I've been working for them now for four days and the talent these lads have is scary."

Mooney's job means he will miss the final two games of the season for Strabane, who travel to Newbuildings on Saturday before the season finale at home to champions-elect Brigade.

"I'm gutted to be missing the end of the season with Strabane. Myself and the players have put in a lot of hard work there and we've had a great year coming up from Division Two, on the cusp hopefully of survival. That was our primary goal for the season. I'll be keeping a close eye on the NW results over the next couple of weeks, and hopefully the Red Caps can get another win that will guarantee top-flight cricket for another year.

Mooney also had been helping the North-West Warriors in recent weeks, and that's something he wants to continue.

"It was great working with Boyd Rankin and the Warriors squad. There are some really talented cricketers there, that maybe aren't showing their full potential yet. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting back with Boyd and the squad over the winter, and into next season also."
