Munster Reds have been dropped from the interprovincial series for the 2026 season.

The move comes as part of a revamp of the interpros which have seen the competition diminish both in terms of quality and public/media interest in recent years.

Munster Reds joined the series in 2017 by firstly playing in the T20 Trophy, joining the 50-overs Cup competition in 2021, winning it the next year.

The composition of the Munster side is almost entirely Leinster-based and this failure to develop home grown talent is a major factor in the decision to drop them.

It's not all doom and gloom as Munster Heat have shown in the Future Series at times, and the focus for Jeremy Bray will now be switched to the development pathways in the hope of establishing Munster players that can compete at this level.

While the interprovincial Championship has been idle since 2019, firstly due to Covid, then financial issues, there is a plan for a two-team best versus best red-ball event, probably to help the senior side with their preparations for the home summer.
